Aikido

  The Japanese martial art Aikido is the legacy of the genius of Ueshiba Sensei (O Sensei).

  This 20th century art is rooted in respect for life and humanity, harmony and non-conflicting movement. The throws and immobilizations that are the vocabulary of Aikido are techniques that are effective but non-destructive.

Observing a class

Before and after class, a friendly Aikidoka will approach you and answer any questions you may have.

• Arrive a few minutes early to allow time for introductions.
• Absolutely no shoes on the mats at any time.
• Please do not disturb the class: Keep cell phones silenced.

Attending your first class

What to expect:

Sensei pays special attention to beginners and you will receive clear instructions during the exercises.

What to bring:

Dress:

• Wear something comfortable that allows for freedom of movement. (Sweat pants / track pants and a t-shirt are fine).
• Avoid clothing that can catch on wayward limbs.

Weapons:

• Your own weapons are not immediately required.
• If you already have your own weapons but are not sure if they can be used, please check with Sensei before class.

General Manners:

• Be punctual.
  If you arrive early, do warm-up exercises or practice by yourself or with others.
  If you arrive late, please wait for permission from the instructor before entering the mat area (tatami).
• Stay alert during practice.
• It is considered impolite to drink water in the middle of practice, so please refrain.
• If you must leave the tatami, notify Sensei before leaving.
• For safety and comfort, keep your nails trimmed, remove all jewelery, and empty your bladder before class.
• Keep your uniform clean, and if you sweat a lot, bring a towel or cloth to class.
• Talking during class is discouraged. Please keep discussions off the mat.

Guidelines for successful practice:

• Do what you are shown. Learn to see and then do.
• Take care of your practice partners.
